What is the difference between Universal and Income Based Free School Meals?

Universal Free School Meals

All children in Foundation Stage, Year 1 and Year 2 are entitled to a free school meal at school, these are provided to all children regardless of income or entitlement to benefits.

Once children move into Year 3 this entitlement ceases.

Income Based Free School Meals

Children from low income households, who are receipt of certain benefits are entitled to Income Based Free School Meals. In addition to a free school meal, there are additional benefits to children who are entitled to Income Based Free School Meals, including a contribution towards school trips, free school milk and a small bursary towards uniform and after-school activity clubs.
